Website & Branding Design for Arts and Culture

Dream Awake is a bold, experimental theatre project that blurs the boundaries between performance, place and lived experience. As a Theatre Company Website Designer working in design for arts and culture, I was commissioned to create a logo, brand identity and website that reflected this sense of immersion, curiosity and emotional depth, while remaining clear, usable and adaptable for various shows with a wide-ranging audience.

The Brief

Dream Awake needed a visual identity and digital presence that felt distinctly theatrical without leaning on clichés. The project spans multiple productions, locations and collaborators, so the branding had to be flexible enough to evolve while still feeling cohesive and recognisable.

The website had to support storytelling, promote productions and provide practical information, all without losing its atmosphere. The goal was to create arts and culture websites that feel engaging, intuitive and emotionally resonant.

Responsive, professional, and good to work with. He was quick to turn around feedback, open to trying different design directions, and always communicative throughout the process. I appreciated his flexibility and speed, which helped keep the project moving. Thank you!

Branding Approach

My approach to Dream Awake’s arts and culture branding was to balance expressiveness with restraint. Typography plays a central role, conveying mood and tension, while a carefully considered colour palette reinforces the emotional tone of each production rather than overpowering it.

The brand identity was designed to work across digital and print applications, from promotional materials to online content, maintaining consistency while allowing space for each performance to develop its own character. The resulting artistic brand identity supports the immersive and collaborative spirit of the project.

Website Design for Dream Awake

The website was designed as a natural extension of the brand, prioritising clarity, flow and narrative. As a professional website design for cultural sector project, usability and accessibility were central considerations. I focused on creating a structure that guides visitors intuitively through the project while allowing content and imagery to breathe.

Subtle design decisions reinforce the immersive theatre branding, helping visitors feel drawn into the world of Dream Awake without compromising readability or navigation.

The site is fully responsive, performing smoothly across devices and orientations so that audiences can explore productions wherever they are.

Key Website Features

Interactive and Dynamic Layouts

The site includes interactive elements to echo Dream Awake’s immersive performances. For example, the text-masked hero sections use real, selectable text rather than static images. This not only enhances accessibility and responsiveness but also strengthens SEO — important for arts culture websites seeking wider reach.

Responsive Behaviour and Custom Coding

I created custom calculations to ensure interactive text displays perfectly across various screen widths and heights. Additional touches — such as scroll-triggered transitions and subtle animations — help pull users into the content and offer a more engaging, atmospheric online experience.

Textures and Muted Colour Palette

To give each performance its own visual identity within the overarching brand, I developed a muted base colour scheme that adapts to individual production palettes. Texture helps break up page sections and adds depth to the layouts, while images begin in soft greyscale and reveal full colour on hover, mirroring themes of awakening and discovery.

Bold, Accessible Typography

Typography is clean, legible and confidently scaled. Responsive calculations ensure the text adapts beautifully to a wide range of screen sizes and orientations without compromising accessibility. Care was taken to avoid awkward line breaks and to maintain a strong visual hierarchy throughout.

Logo and Artistic Brand Identity

The Dream Awake logo design needed to be clean, distinctive and flexible enough to sit alongside individual production visuals without clashing. I created a logotype with varied letter sizes to communicate movement, contrast and the shifting states of dreaming and wakefulness.

During the branding process, I explored multiple logo concepts, experimenting with custom typography, contrasting letterforms, symbolism and framing devices. Collaboration with the client played a key role — I believe effective arts and culture branding comes from open communication, creative exploration and the confidence to refine ideas that truly work.

Performance Company Logo Designs and Branding Concepts

As part of every branding project, I explore a wide range of visual styles and conceptual directions. My aim is to create an artistic brand identity that feels authentic to the client, while also working effectively for audiences and end users. Close collaboration is essential; I listen carefully to preferences and feedback, while also offering guidance and professional insight drawn from my experience in arts and culture branding.

Good communication allows space to champion ideas that will genuinely support the brand, while still respecting the client’s vision. This collaborative approach leads to identities that are both creatively engaging and practically effective across print and digital platforms.

Artistic Brand Identity & Logo Design for Theatre Production

This concept focuses on creating an artistic brand identity that visually captures the dual state of dreaming and wakefulness. It allows for bespoke brand elements and adaptable styling across different productions, making it well-suited to immersive theatre branding and promotional materials within the cultural sector.

Clean graphical Dream Awake logo concept for theatre production company

Clean Graphical Depiction of Dream Awake

This concept takes a clear, graphical approach to expressing the Dream Awake name, focusing on legibility while still conveying a sense of motion and energy. The letterforms are clean and uncluttered, but their subtle fluidity hints at the shifting perspectives and immersive experiences within the productions. The design scales well across print and digital applications and works effectively for arts culture websites, posters and promotional materials within the cultural sector.

Custom Typography Logo for Immersive Theatre

This concept centres on bespoke, hand-crafted letterforms created specifically for Dream Awake to form a truly distinctive logotype. The sharper, more defined edges convey alertness and waking, while the softer curves introduce a dreamlike quality that reflects the company’s immersive approach to performance. The contrast between these shapes captures the duality at the heart of the project and helps establish a memorable artistic brand identity that translates well across print, digital media and promotional materials within the cultural sector.

The Result

The final outcome is a cohesive artistic brand identity and website that supports Dream Awake’s creative ambitions while providing a practical platform for promotion and engagement. The identity feels confident and distinctive, and the website offers a clear, atmospheric gateway into the world of contemporary performance.

This project reflects my ongoing passion for design for arts and culture, combining theatre company website design, logo design and arts and culture branding to help creative organisations communicate their stories in compelling and meaningful ways.
