I had the privilege of working on a comprehensive Supported Living Website Design project for Avicenna, a provider of personalized care for young adults with learning difficulties.

The goal was to create a website that is both accessible and engaging while being user-friendly and fun. I also redesigned the logo to better align with the organization’s target audience.

User-Friendly Web Design

Accessible Website Design for Young Adults with Learning Difficulties

Creating accessible websites is essential for ensuring young adults with learning difficulties and their loved ones can effectively engage with digital content. By considering the unique needs of these users, I implemented design strategies focused on ease of use, comprehension, and engagement.

The result is a website that empowers users with learning difficulties to navigate the digital (and real) world with confidence and independence, promoting inclusivity and making the digital space welcoming to all.

Working with Steve on our website has been an exceptional experience. From start to finish, his communication was outstanding—he kept us informed at every step, explaining how things work and offering valuable tips to enhance our content. Steve truly took the time to understand the message we wanted to convey through our website, which made a significant difference in the final result.
His creativity is remarkable. Steve explored various styles, fonts, and design elements, making the entire process both interesting and engaging. His flexibility and professionalism were evident throughout the project, and his ability to adapt to our needs while maintaining the project’s vision was impressive.
I highly recommend Steve for any graphic design work. His combination of creativity, communication skills, and professionalism is rare, and he delivers high-quality work that truly resonates with the intended audience.

Key Factors for Creating an Accessible Website

1. Simple and Clear Navigation
  • Consistent Layout: A uniform visual structure across all pages provides predictability, helping users feel more comfortable and reducing cognitive load.
  • Simple Menu Structure: Menus were designed to be logical and straightforward, avoiding overwhelming users with too many choices. A show/hide feature for the header improves clarity, disappearing when scrolling down and reappearing when scrolling up, allowing quick and accessible navigation.
  • Clear Buttons: The buttons were styled simply and clearly to indicate links, using large, clickable elements to ensure ease of selection.
  • Interactive Elements: Subtle interactions and movement were added to guide the user’s eye, encouraging engagement with key content areas.
2. Readable and Understandable Content
  • Plain Language: Content was written in plain, easy-to-understand language, avoiding jargon or complex sentences.
  • Short Sentences and Paragraphs: Information was broken into manageable chunks, making it easier to read, and less intimidating, especially for those who struggle with comprehension.
  • Visual Aids: Relevant visuals were added to reinforce the text, helping convey complex ideas more clearly.
  • Clear Typography: A responsive design ensures that text remains legible and clear across all screen sizes.
  • Stylised Imagery: Rather than using standard rectangular images, I created fun shapes, to break up the content and make it more engaging.

Leveraging the Use of AI Tools to Create Applicable Imagery

Artificial intelligence is increasingly popular, but when specific imagery is required, the results can vary. While I strive to use real photography where possible, in this case, the availability of relevant images was limited.

I used various AI tools to generate the imagery, but the initial results were often lacking in quality, appearing adequate only at thumbnail size. To enhance these images, I used additional AI tools and Photoshop for retouching, ensuring the subjects appeared more authentic and representative of young adults with learning difficulties, rather than idealized figures.

AI Glitches and the Importance of a Professional Designer

While AI-generated imagery can provide strong concepts, the execution often falls short. As shown with the initial AI renders, the concept of the imagery was strong while the execution left a lot to be desired!

I’ll highlight some common issues below:

  • Hands: AI frequently renders incorrect finger counts or adds digits where none should exist.
  • Inconsistencies: For example, the frames of sunglasses might be mismatched in shape and size.
  • Facial Features: Eyes often appear unnatural, while the mouth and teeth frequently look overly sharp or distorted.
  • Defects at Object Edges: Glitches appear where objects meet, compromising the image’s clarity.
  • Unrealistic Details: Objects like a floating glass in water, despite no one holding it!

AI is a powerful tool, but it should complement visual design, not replace the expertise of a skilled designer.

Supported Living Logo Redesign

Recreating the visual identity to better reflect the target audience

Before contacting me, Avicenna had a basic logo with potential, but it did not accurately portray their mission or target audience.

Issues with the Old Logo Design

The original logo was a raster image, limiting its usability at larger sizes due to pixelation. Its typography was poorly spaced, and the design portrayed a small child, which misrepresented the organization’s focus on supporting young adults with learning difficulties.

Benefits of the Redesigned Logo

The new logo, created as a vector file, allows scalability without quality loss. I provided a full logo pack with various layouts to suit different spaces, ensuring flexibility for all applications.

The typography was refined for better spacing and readability. Additionally, I redesigned the emblem to feature a young adult, reflecting the organization’s focus while retaining the essence of the original design.

Custom Iconography Design

To complement the overall Supported Living Website Design, I also created custom iconography inspired by the name Avicenna, which honours the renowned Persian-Arabic philosopher and physician,

I crafted custom icons drawing from the intricate patterns of traditional Persian tiles. These designs pay homage to the brand’s roots while adding a unique and meaningful visual element.
